Smashing Patriarchy: Revenue & Resistance in Real Time

This week I had coffee with a woman I just met.

She’s an executive leadership coach, introduced to me by another IRL connection with whom I recently reconnected after years. She had bought my book and shared it on LinkedIn, so I was a fan before we sat down.

We talked about summer plans and she shared her recent journey into coaching. When she asked about my work, I considered making things sound better than reality. Instead, I chose transparency.

I told her that I spent a year not marketing my coaching and writing a book instead, and that I now realize that was because I’m ready for coaching to represent a smaller percentage of my time.

I shared that I’ve been finding joy in community. That I’m still figuring out what that means, and that I’ve chronically undervalued my work in creating space.

And I told her that I’ve entered my “out of fucks” era because it feels nearly impossible to do work that doesn’t light me up. That’s reflected in my revenue, which is terrifying (but the possibility also feels liberating).

I even told her that sharing all of that brought up my own mindset shit, worrying that she’ll judge me or see me as “less than.”

Instead, she got excited. She’d recently talked to two other women my age feeling the same mix of confusion and energy around “how do I want my career to end?” She validated my feelings and said she’s excited to follow my journey.

I drove home reinvigorated.

That’s why I’m take a “watch me (re)build approach” to this newsletter. I’m hoping it helps others in a similar boat feel seen and less alone, and maybe inspires others to take their own values-aligned actions.

So, let’s look at May’s numbers. Warning: it’s not good.

Breaking down the numbers

May was always going to be lower than April, which benefitted from a very hard push of pricey book bundles before the official April 30th release of Liberate Your Business.

May is closer to my new normal baseline, which is what I’m going to be attempting to change while my paid subscribers watch.
